What is smart work? And what is it not?
The world has recently been forced to embrace a new work model: smart work. While this model is not entirely new, it has forced organisations to change the way they look at their work environment – from team collaboration to communication and IT security. To be able to fully embrace the model of smart work, we must first understand what it is. And what it is not.
What is smart work?
An academic definition of Smart Working is „a new model of work that uses new technologies and develops existing ones to improve both employees’ performance and job satisfaction.”
What smart work is not.
Smart work is not working one or two days a week and is not simply working from home.
Rethinking the entire organization
While individual professionals (freelancers, individual consultants, contractors etc.) have always had the possibility of working remotely and flexibly, this is new to bigger organisations. Moreover, this brings a degree of complexity to an organisations’ structure and workflows. Smart Work as a concept concerns organizations and not individual professionals.
Implementing Smart Work in an organisation involves a process of change aimed at empowering the individual worker and increasing his/her commitment to achieving corporate objectives while guaranteeing the right conditions to combine professional life and personal life (work-life balance).
In this way the worker is:
- Satisfied with the activity he/she carries out;
- Engaged and motivated to achieve corporate goals.
This new approach places the individual at the center of the organization, making personal and professional objectives converge with corporate ones, in a way that guarantees greater corporate productivity.
Smart Work aims to empower the individual worker, making him/her the owner of the work, aware of the results to be achieved, aware of the need for teamwork, but also autonomous in defining methods and timing of carrying out the activities.
How is your organisation embracing smart work?
When properly implemented, Smart Work can drastically increase business productivity. However, it is necessary to face specific changes, not only technical-organizational, but also cultural.
To support companies facing this challenge, Syneto has created a White Paper on the topic, entitled “The Challenge of Smart Working at the Time of COVID-19“, addressed to its strategic partners and freely downloadable from our website.
