What is primary data? – Syneto Vocabulary
Data comes in various forms – from different types of files (project data, customer information, product data and documentation, etc.) to application data (business software, backups, etc.). All of these kinds of data represent the driving force of organizations of all shapes and sizes. According to how the data is used, it is often split into two categories: primary data and secondary data. This article looks into what primary data means.
What is primary data?
Primary data represents information that is frequently accessed by applications, hardware systems or end-users. It represents data that is in active use – actively generated or collected directly from its source(s). This type of data is usually critical for an organization, as it drives the day-to-day operations of a business.
Primary data is estimated to represent about 20% of the data used by an organization and can take either the form of application data (applications that are used frequently) or files. Traditionally, primary and secondary data are handled by primary, respectively secondary storage.
