What is data replication?

Data replication is the process of copying data from one location to another in order to have one or multiple up-to-date copies of the data. Data replication is often used for Disaster Recovery (DR) purposes, but also for operational recovery.

In both these scenarios, the replicated data essentially serves as backups that are used in order to achieve data protection. The backups (replicated data) also serve for recovery purposes in the case of a negative event or downtime incident.

When used for Disaster Recovery, data replication often involves the copying of data to a secondary location or infrastructure unit. This way, the backups are safe and easy to recover in case the main data suffers corruption or loss.
