What is Disaster Recovery? – Syneto Vocabulary
Technical words can sound complicated, even for the more experienced IT professionals. At Syneto, we use a “vocabulary” that helps us define our products and services. One word you will hear often around us is: Disaster Recovery.
What is Disaster Recovery and why does it matter?
Disaster recovery (DR) is an area of IT that aims to protect an organization from the effects of significant negative events or disasters. Having DR capabilities allows an organization to maintain or quickly resume mission-critical functions following a disaster, minimizing downtime.
These “disasters” can be:
- natural disasters – e.g. an earthquake, a storm etc.
- “man-made”- e.g. power failure, fire-safety systems, electricity issues etc.
Downtime is one of the biggest fears of today’s businesses. Minimizing downtime in case of a disaster is vital. If a business stops being operative, it is no longer productive and loses large amounts of money and, potentially, reputation.
Recovering the data is another important aspect: lost data usually involves losing numerous hours of work and in some cases, the data cannot be recreated once lost (sensitive customer data, project data etc.)
Within an organisation, Disaster Recovery involves a set of policies and tools that enable the recovery of vital IT functions, should the IT infrastructure suffer downtime. In order to achieve Disaster Recovery, a company needs to have disaster recovery “tools” (capabilities), but also a good Disaster Recovery Plan, which ensures that the IT team will work at maximum efficiency in making the systems functional, as they were initially.
Syneto’s approach to Disaster Recovery
Syneto products are equipped with built-in DR capabilities, allowing the recovery of the entire infrastructure (files and applications) within 15 minutes after a disaster occurs. Data protection is achieved through instant automatic backups of all the data on the infrastructure.
