Milano, Italy – 1st of March, 2016 – Syneto, the Europe-based manufacturer of the storage industry’s finest arrays, has been selected by the Silca, one of the largest manufacturers of keys, professional, industrial and automotive key-cutting machine solutions in the world, to replace a legacy IT infrastructure with its ULTRA Series and EXTREME Series arrays.

Operating in more than 60 countries, mostly in Europe and North Amercia, (within the Key Systems Segment) with 400 employees working in Silca’s Italian facilities, Silca needed a solution that could match its strong growth trajectory. Specifically, Silca, who was introduced to Syneto by SWITCH, was looking to improve the overall performance of its production data workloads, consolidate its servers through virtualisation, implement a disaster recovery (DR) strategy and create a virtual desktop infrastructure.

Silca produces a range of over 66,000 types of key blanks. It designs and manufactures a wide range of cutting machines and accessories. It therefore needs to store large volumes of data; 24/7 access demands also mean that the IT team was keen to ensure high data availability through a DR strategy to reduce the risk and duration of downtime and data loss. Syneto implemented two ULTRA Series 420 arrays: a 75TB one as primary storage running more than 100 virtual production-critical servers and a 50TB system located approximately 300 metres away from the main datacentre, as a data protection target. The replication is provided by Syneto’s InstaSnap technology, which takes point-in-time data snapshots hourly to backup data between the two systems. The InstaSnap and VirtualUnity technologies work in concert to create backups of virtual servers without the need for specialised backup software. This feature enables Silca to save over € 6.000 in backup software licenses. Syneto’s IntregriCheck technology ensures long-term data consistency.

“Syneto has gone far beyond our expectations: the arrays have integrated faultlessly with our storage infrastructure, they take little time and effort to manage and the performance, reliability and scalability they offer are above anything else we looked at. Syneto has made an enormous difference to our company.”

said Nicola Ponchia, Divisional Information Officer, at Silca.

The ULTRA Series arrays, which can be easily scaled-out with the addition of JBODs, are connected to four VMware ESX host machines and rely on Syneto’s VirtualUnity technology for fast and easy VMware integration and virtual machine management.

Silca also turned to Syneto to implement its virtual desktop infrastructure. The company’s virtual desktops are business-critical and the underpinning storage solution would need to provide consistently high performance and seamlessly integrate with VMware technology. To meet these criteria Syneto deployed an EXTREME Series 220 AFA array, which delivers over 340k IOPS and an impressive 3x data reduction. The EXTREME array’s 8TB of raw space offer Silca 24TB of actual usable space thanks to Syneto’s SpaceBoost technology which maximises capacity utilisation with deduplication and block-by-block in-line data compression, increasing IO efficiency and write speed while reducing the required storage capacity by two thirds. Furthermore, thin provisioning ensures that additional storage is only allocated when it is actually needed.

“We like to partner with vendors that allow us to empower our customers through solid, innovative technology. Syneto is a critical element of our solutions portfolio and the deployment at Silca is another example of this. Truly, Syneto’s arrays offer a combination of features and benefits that just cannot be found among its competitors,”

said Luca Bassetto, CEO at SWITCH
“Once again our ULTRA and EXTREME arrays have demonstrated Syneto’s ability to beat the competition with relevant, proven solutions that can meet a range of IT challenges. Silca is a prime example of an organisation looking to maximise the level of support its IT infrastructure gives the business to ensure it stays competitive. We are thrilled to have helped another customer achieve this,”

said Dragoș Chioran, VP of marketing and design at Syneto.

The Silca Group is planning to expand its use of the Syneto EXTREME 220 AFA in the near future.
