Silca, a leading European manufacturer of key blanks and key-cutting machines, deployed two Syneto ULTRA Series 420 arrays to consolidate VMware storage and build a reliable disaster recovery strategy for more than 150 TB of business-critical data.
Silca, headquartered in Treviso, Italy, is a leading European manufacturer of key blanks and key-cutting machines. The company produces a range of over 66,000 types of key blanks and designs a wide portfolio of cutting machines and accessories. With more than 400 employees and a presence in over 60 countries, Silca is on a strong growth trajectory that places heavy demands on its IT infrastructure.
Silca needed to replace a cumbersome and slow legacy IT infrastructure that required constant attention. The company stores over 150 TB of data and requires 24/7 access to it, so the team needed a scalable and reliable solution to ensure high data availability through a disaster recovery strategy that would reduce the risk and duration of downtime and data loss. At the same time, Silca wanted to improve the overall performance of its production data workloads and consolidate its servers through virtualisation.
The previous IT environment was cumbersome and slow, requiring constant attention from the team and holding back the performance of production data workloads.
With over 150 TB of data and a need for round-the-clock availability, Silca required a scalable, reliable platform that could keep business-critical data online at all times.
The team needed a true disaster recovery strategy to reduce the risk and duration of downtime and data loss as the company continued its strong growth trajectory.
Silca wanted to consolidate disparate servers through virtualisation, simplifying management while improving the performance of its production workloads.
Syneto implemented two ULTRA Series 420 arrays, each with a 4 TB SSD cache. The first, a 75 TB array, was deployed as primary storage supporting more than 100 virtual production-critical servers. The second, a 50 TB system, was deployed approximately 300 metres away from the main datacentre as a backup target, providing geographic separation for a true disaster recovery strategy.
The ULTRA Series arrays serve as main storage for four VMware ESX host machines and rely on Syneto's VirtualUnity technology for fast and easy VMware integration and virtual machine management, hosting more than 100 production-critical virtual servers.
Data replication is provided by Syneto's InstaSnap technology, which takes hourly point-in-time snapshots to back up data between the two systems, keeping the second array continuously aligned with production.
InstaSnap and VirtualUnity work in concert to create backups of virtual servers without the need for specialised backup software, saving Silca thousands of euros in backup software licenses.
Syneto's IntegriCheck technology ensures long-term data consistency, while the ULTRA Series arrays can be easily scaled out with the addition of JBODs as Silca's data continues to grow.
With two ULTRA Series 420 arrays in place, Silca gained a reliable, scalable foundation for its production workloads and a true disaster recovery strategy that protects more than 150 TB of business-critical data across geographically separated systems.
