Picchi Machine Tools deployed Syneto Office Storage to speed up CAD development, ensure data consistency, virtualise its servers, reduce hardware complexity and cut costs.
Founded in 1958, Picchi Machine Tools manufactures special hi-tech machine tools designed to solve every kind of production problem. A member of the Bugatti Group, Picchi pairs in-depth industry know-how with a culture of daily innovation — proven by Gianni Picchi's invention of the first diamond sphere cutting machine in 1968. Its product line spans transfer machines, CNC machines, superfinishing machines, pump, valve and gas components, automotive part machines and machines for sanitary fittings, with thousands of installations delivered to satisfied customers worldwide.
CAD development had become slow and costly. Very slow data access times and complex retrieval and merging procedures caused mounting project delays: independent CAD project parts were finished on time, but consolidating them was laborious and missed deadlines. The old infrastructure had reached peak capacity, lacked proper disaster recovery, and produced backups that were inconsistent over time and slow to create. Because every CAD project piece lived on a different machine, engineers constantly fought data version conflicts, and managing the complicated, dispersed environment relied on expensive external IT consultants.
Very slow data access times plus complex retrieval and merging procedures piled up project delays. CAD parts finished on time but consolidating them was laborious, and the legacy architecture could not support a modern agile workflow.
The existing solution created backups that were inconsistent over time and slow to make. For complex, often customised machine-tool designs, the lack of proper disaster recovery could prove fatal to the business.
Picchi's old infrastructure had reached peak capacity. Legacy independent servers cost a lot to buy and even more to maintain, while data volumes for industrial design kept growing fast.
Every independent CAD project piece lived on a different machine. Engineers constantly battled inconsistencies in data versions and backups, often making it impossible to consolidate everything into the finished project.
Picchi chose Syneto Office Storage to consolidate its infrastructure onto a single, agile platform. An 8TB Office Storage array with SSD cache accelerates CAD work, VMware integration virtualised its three independent servers, and a second 8TB Office Storage array receives replicated backups for disaster recovery and business continuity. Active Directory integration and Solidworks PDM complete the solution.
The Syneto Office Storage SSD cache delivers up to 50% more speed when reading or writing data. The caching feature on Storage OS keeps important, frequently used data in a very fast SSD layer, accelerating CAD project completion times so engineers can access design data fast whenever they need it.
Storage OS's simple VMware integration made virtualising Picchi's costly independent servers effortless. With all three servers unified under a virtualised infrastructure, the company now has fast, easy access to its resources while keeping a low management time and cost footprint.
The Backup and Replication feature on Storage OS protects all of Picchi's data, backed up automatically in minutes thanks to the incremental saving process. A second Office Storage array receives these backups from the main machine, ensuring business continuity in case of any unforeseen events, and Picchi can revert to earlier versions of its data with a few clicks.
All of the infrastructure was consolidated onto Syneto Office Storage. Different CAD project pieces can now be accessed, worked on and saved while maintaining file version transparency and easy point-in-time retrieval, so Picchi can focus on designing and building excellent machine tools instead of losing time to data inconsistencies.
Consolidating onto Syneto Office Storage removed the bottlenecks that had been holding CAD development back. SSD-cached access made data reads and writes up to 50% faster, virtualisation collapsed three costly servers into one managed infrastructure, and replicated incremental backups finally gave Picchi a real disaster recovery posture — all while cutting reliance on expensive external IT consultants.
Picchi's motto — the customer doesn't want just an answer, he wants the right answer — was in complete harmony with Syneto's work ethic, leading to a partnership defined by mutual growth. Time-to-market problems are now a thing of the past, and engineers can concentrate on developing brilliant machine tools rather than losing time saving and accessing data.
