Background02
Chapter 01 · Background

A testing center where every data point counts.

The Wind Technology Testing Center (WTTC) is a partnership between the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) and the Massachusetts Clean Energy Center (MassCEC), which employs 120 people. The facility performs structural testing on wind turbine blades, an effort that depends entirely on capturing data reliably and at speed.

During blade testing, data acquisition systems collect thousands of measurement points, generating a significant volume of data for analysis. These data collection points on the wind turbine blades are the most important asset the center handles. With production testing running continuously, the environment carries 24/7 high-availability requirements: any storage that cannot keep pace puts the integrity of a test campaign at risk.

The pain points that led the IT team to evaluate a new platform were clear: insufficient IOPS, the lack of flexible shared storage, and the need to guarantee data integrity and acquisition speed across multiple acquisition machines — all within the budget constraints of NREL and the WTTC, and without interrupting production testing.

Insufficient IOPS

The existing storage could not deliver the I/O needed to capture thousands of data points at full acquisition speed.

No flexible shared storage

Acquisition machines lacked a single flexible pool to share, forcing engineers to handle data per machine.

Data integrity at risk

Without enough write speed, missing measurements had to be modelled or reconstructed, threatening data integrity.

Budget & uptime constraints

Any new platform had to fit NREL/WTTC budgets and deploy without interrupting production testing.

The Syneto approach03
Chapter 02 · The Syneto approach

A Syneto platform built for write speed.

The WTTC evaluated alternatives from Scale, Dell, Synology and EMC before choosing Syneto. The decision came down to price, performance and a trusted-advisor relationship — Syneto offered the right balance of cost, speed and ease of use for a research environment that cannot compromise on data integrity.

The Syneto solution delivers the sustained write speed each acquisition machine requires, so the data streaming off the wind turbine blade tests is written reliably and in full. The platform supports SQL and the NREL data-collection applications, and protects 13 TB of test data. Installation went very well — the only friction came from delivery delays — and day-to-day management of the solution requires minimal effort from the team.

Write speed per acquisition machine

Syneto provides the write performance each acquisition machine needs, capturing every data point during testing.

Flexible shared storage

A single shared platform replaces siloed storage, giving engineers consistent access to test data across machines.

Application support

The platform supports SQL and the NREL data-collection applications that drive blade testing.

Low-effort management

Ease of use was a selection criterion: the team now spends minimal time managing the Syneto storage.

Results04
Chapter 03 · Results

Accurate data, captured at full speed.

With Syneto in production, the WTTC captures more accurate data across every blade test campaign. Sufficient write speed on each acquisition machine removes the need to model or reconstruct missing data, while remote access ends on-site travel just to move data.
