Italy's leading corporate information-security company replaced tape-based services with a Syneto high availability cluster, building a private cloud for backup-as-a-service and fast, incremental, replicated backups.
Data Storage Security (DSS) has over 30 years of experience in securing corporate data. Founded in 2009 as the successor to Data Bank, it carries forward the legacy of a company born in 1983. Today DSS is the leading company for corporate information security in Italy, able to safely store both physical and virtual data assets, with over 500 clients across the country and certifications including ISO 9001, ISO 27001 and SA8000. Its offsite service keeps backup media in ultra-secure physical vaults, with magnetic tapes held in sealed armored boxes after pickup, two strategically located vaults, 24/7 traceability 365 days a year, pickup services and technological support for handling and inventory management.
Traditional tape storage could no longer provide adequate service levels for customers. Tape requires far more maintenance and logistics than modern solutions: the entire process demands heavy manpower, which erodes profit margins and the attractiveness of DSS' offers. Load balancing on tape is also ineffective, because even when the archive holds terabytes of free space it is scattered across dozens of separate tapes and cannot be used. DSS needed a cloud infrastructure where clients could safely keep their data backups, plus the ability to create and retain fast, incremental backups in its secure vaults.
Tape is a storage medium that requires far more maintenance and logistics than modern solutions. The entire process demands heavy manpower, which decreases profit margins and the attractiveness of DSS' offers.
Load balancing on tape is ineffective. Even when the archive holds terabytes of free space, it is scattered across dozens of separate tapes and cannot be used as a single pool.
To keep its customer base satisfied, DSS needed a cloud infrastructure where clients could safely keep their data backups, removing the need to physically move tapes or HDDs to the secure vault.
DSS also needed the ability to create and keep fast, incremental backups in its secure vaults, so that clients could set retention policies to their own needs without the labour overhead of tape.
To overhaul its services, DSS deployed a Syneto Storage High Availability cluster: two 16-bay appliances and one 24-bay JBOD with an SSD cache layer. A third Syneto Storage appliance receives the cluster's backup replications and ensures disaster recovery for the whole HA cluster. The platform delivers native, fast, incremental backups, high availability and truly unified storage for file data (NFS/CIFS) and application block data (iSCSI). On this foundation DSS now offers two distinct services.
Two 16-bay Syneto Storage appliances form the HA cluster head, backed by a 24-bay JBOD with an SSD cache layer that buffers heavy reads and writes. A heartbeat monitor keeps both storage nodes in sync.
Customers keep their first backup on a cloud infrastructure located in a secure data vault. Every later backup is incremental and completes very fast: efficient backup-as-a-service and disaster recovery, with no physical media to move.
For clients requiring the absolute highest security, DSS provides on-site Syneto Storage hardware sharing data over NFS/CIFS (files) and iSCSI (application data). Disks holding the incremental backups go periodically to the DSS vault for long-term storage.
Storage OS' ZFS filesystem gives DSS native backup replication. Backups are scheduled and replicated automatically with little staff effort; after the first backup and replication, every following operation is very fast and fully automated.
By partnering with Syneto, DSS replaced tape with a modern, automated platform and extended its service range with cloud disaster recovery and fast incremental backups. The result is higher efficiency and lower costs for both DSS and its end users, with business continuity and faster backups compared with older tape-based disaster recovery.
By partnering with Syneto, DSS extended its service range with disaster recovery in the cloud and fast incremental backups, gaining business continuity and faster backups versus older tape-based disaster recovery, while delivering higher efficiency and lower costs for both DSS and its end users.
