CNR — Eliminating data-loss risk and consolidating storage.

Italy's National Research Council chose Syneto to remove the risk of data loss, bring scattered research data onto a single platform and virtualise part of its server farm.

Chapter 01 · Background

A vast research campus with fragmented IT.

The National Research Council (CNR) is the Italian public organisation responsible for carrying out, promoting, spreading, transferring and improving research activities, sustaining the growth of know-how and knowledge for the scientific, technological, economic and social development of the country. Its Rome installation was born in 1970 and has grown continuously ever since.

CNR Montelibretti in Rome is the first and largest of CNR's properties, covering around 70 hectares and hosting 17 institutions whose research spans agriculture and food, environment, cultural heritage, biology and forestry, biotechnology, technical innovation, medical and health sciences, and material sciences. An organisation of this size produces tremendous amounts of important scientific data — from documents, presentations, graphs, images and media to block-type application data — dispersed across many different hardware platforms.

Data-security risk

No centralised, efficient storage capable of smart backups. A very complex data environment spread across different platforms created a real risk of data loss.

Complex, costly hardware

An "as-needed" approach to storage produced a multitude of separate servers and storage devices — and with complexity came mounting maintenance costs and management time.

A crowded server farm

Different scientific requirements meant separate applications on their own servers, leaving a large number of physical servers consuming vast amounts of space and power.

Chapter 02 · The Syneto approach

One unified storage platform.

Syneto provided CNR with a Syneto Unified Storage 16TB solution, paired with VMware integration, Active Directory integration and automatic backups. The platform addressed all three problems at once — data protection, data consolidation and server virtualisation — under a single, simple management interface.

Disaster recovery & automatic backups

Fast, incremental backups scheduled automatically from the Storage OS interface. They run transparently in the background, without interruptions, removing the need to constantly invest time saving data.

Consolidated, efficient storage

Multiple file and block protocols bring every kind of data — files and application data alike — into a single space. Compression, thin provisioning and deduplication store it cost-effectively.

Server virtualisation with VMware

The VMware integration feature was used to virtualise some of CNR's physical servers. The virtual machines consume only a fraction of the resources of their physical counterparts and cut the manpower needed to keep servers running.

Active Directory integration

Native Active Directory integration ties storage access to the institution's existing identity and permissions, so data is served to the right users with no extra administrative overhead.

Safer data, simpler infrastructure.

With a single Syneto Unified Storage platform in place, CNR Montelibretti turned a fragmented, hardware-heavy environment into a consolidated infrastructure that protects its scientific data automatically while reducing the space, power and management burden of its server farm.

Data-loss risk eliminated through disaster recovery with fast, incremental and automatic backups.
All research data — files and application data — consolidated onto a single storage infrastructure.
Storage efficiency features — compression, thin provisioning and deduplication — keep data stored cost-effectively.
Part of the physical server farm virtualised with VMware, freeing space, power and management effort.
Once configured, the system works in the background and serves data as required, needing no further attention.
A platform that runs itself

Once configured, the Syneto system requires no further attention — it works in the background, protecting and serving CNR's scientific data while the institution's staff focus on research instead of infrastructure.
