Chapter 01 · Background

Company and challenge.

Founded in 2012 by professionals with decades of experience, Antedata implements high-performance CAD data storage that delivers strong security and faster time-to-market for CAD projects. Its solutions integrate fully into the CAD environment to ensure the safety of design data. As a Syneto partner, Antedata turned to Syneto for its own internal storage requirements.

Many of Antedata's vital operations run on a virtualised server infrastructure based on VMware, with two hypervisors hosting a mix of equally important virtual machines that generate large volumes of business-critical data. Without a smart backup and recovery solution, this VM data was either resource-consuming or impossible to back up, as there was no technology in place to interface with the VMware hypervisors. Simple backups living on the same appliance left all data at risk if anything happened to the hardware or software — there was no true Disaster Recovery.

CAD 3D projects are inherently complex, made up of thousands or even millions of separate files that must remain reliably and quickly accessible at all times. Antedata's existing storage could not provide the performance such a demanding data situation required. On top of this, the very mixed data structure — block-level virtual machine data alongside file-level CAD projects — would normally require heavy investment in different specialised hardware. Antedata needed a smart solution that could handle this consolidated workload on a simplified hardware platform.

Disaster Recovery
Uncertain VM backups

Two VMware hypervisors hosted equally important virtual machines, but without technology to interface with the hypervisors, VM data was either resource-consuming or impossible to back up.

No true Disaster Recovery

Simple backups lived on the same appliance and software instance. If anything happened to the hardware or software, all data was at risk — there was no replication to a separate appliance.

Slow CAD file access

CAD 3D projects contain thousands or millions of separate files that must stay reliably and quickly accessible. Antedata's existing storage could not deliver the required performance.

Heavy storage consumption

A very mixed data structure — block-level VM data plus file-level CAD projects — would normally require costly investment in different specialised hardware. Antedata wanted to avoid that purchase.

The Syneto approach03
Chapter 02 · The Syneto approach

The Syneto solution.

Antedata chose a Syneto Unified Storage 16-bay appliance, with SSD cache, to consolidate its data storage requirements. A second Syneto product — an 8-bay Office Storage appliance — receives replicated backups from the main appliance. Both run Syneto Storage OS, which handles VMware virtual machine data at block level and CAD files at file level on a single, simplified platform. Syneto was the right match for an innovative platform that easily meets the demands of CAD environments, as the only European manufacturer of data storage with integrated virtualisation and disaster recovery.

CAD users work through two VMware hypervisors; the Unified Storage 16-bay holds VM and CAD data, then replicates incremental backups to a completely separate Office Storage 8-bay for true Disaster Recovery.
Fast backups with VMware integration

Storage OS shares virtual disks with the VMware servers and uses the ZFS filesystem to provide fast, incremental backups of the hosted virtual machines. Their incremental nature keeps backups always fast and easy to achieve.

True Disaster Recovery

Backups are replicated incrementally to a completely separate 8-bay Office Storage appliance. The entire backup and replication process is automated and scheduled at Antedata's chosen intervals. VM backups preserve memory consistency by accounting for RAM data and suspending on-going disk writes.

Faster CAD access with SSD caching

An SSD caching layer (L2ARC) holds "hot" data for much faster access than regular HDDs, while a RAM-based ARC cache tracks frequently and recently used data — keeping the data CAD development depends on always on hand.

Storage efficiency

Data Compression, Deduplication and Thin Provisioning allocate resources on a just-as-needed basis while compressing and removing duplicate data, letting Antedata make up to 50% better use of its storage space.
