The Agency for Digital Italy adopted a Syneto Unified Storage solution to improve data sharing, virtualise its server farm and ensure fast, consistent backups and recoveries.
The Agency for Digital Italy, established by legislative decree no. 83 and converted into Law no. 134/2012, acts as an aggregator for digital skills previously distributed across different public entities. It coordinates innovation policy and drives the digitisation and modernisation of the Italian public administration, implementing the Digital Agenda for Europe across services such as gov.it websites, digital signature certification, certified email, the Public Connectivity System and the national PA Data Centre.
As the body responsible for introducing the latest technologies to the Italian public administration, the Agency itself needed a modern storage infrastructure with fast access to data. Instead, its environment was complicated and dispersed: data lived on independent, small hardware that was not properly interconnected, which slowed data access and prevented the distribution of important information. A decentralised server farm, with many different servers on separate hardware platforms, drove steadily growing maintenance, manpower, space and power costs. Disaster Recovery was inconsistent, because manual backups were performed on independent resources that could never be centralised — making recovery chancy and causing frequent work interruptions.
The Agency adopted a Syneto Unified Storage with a total of 8 TB, consolidating all data — from files to applications — onto a single, interconnected platform whose Storage OS is built on the ZFS filesystem.
A smart VMware integration virtualised the costly server farm, importing the entire vServer list in seconds. Syneto Storage holds, backs up and allocates all VM data as a shared resource.
Incremental, automatic scheduled backups protect all data with almost no downtime and minimal maintenance. ZFS recovers any point in time in minutes, plus Windows Previous Versions support.
LACP (Link Aggregation Control Protocol) and Fibre Channel transparently aggregate multiple network cards, delivering the access speeds the Agency's large user base needs.
Active Directory integration ties the consolidated storage into the Agency's identity environment and keeps shared data accessible to authorised users.
Syneto Unified Storage 8 TB · VMware integration · Active Directory integration · Automatic Backups · LACP functionality · Fibre Channel protocol.
With everything consolidated on a single Syneto Unified Storage, the Agency now runs a modern, efficient and protected platform: servers virtualised and data shared at speed.
