The Italian Air Force equipped one of its largest radar installations with Syneto storage to virtualise an ageing, costly server infrastructure and achieve true Disaster Recovery through fast, scheduled Snapshots.
Founded in 1923, Aeronautica Militare is the aerial defence force of Italy and one of the best-equipped air forces in the world, with over 43,000 personnel and 550+ aircraft. Its Comando Operativo Delle Forze Aeree controls every military radar installation in the country. The Syneto arrays were deployed with the 22nd Radar Squadron in Licola, which manages 8 separate radar stations and consolidates their data at its squadron headquarters.
The radar base processed everything from high-resolution radar imagery to virtual machine data on older storage and server hardware. As the volume of sensitive data grew, and with strict retention and safety policies to enforce, that equipment became increasingly expensive to service and maintain. Maintenance demanded ever more time and personnel, expanding the system was costly, and the base lacked a transparent, automatic Disaster Recovery capability suited to a military installation.
Older storage and servers handled everything from high-resolution radar images to VM data. As data grew and retention policies tightened, servicing and expanding that equipment became increasingly expensive.
The growing volume of data and military policy constraints required huge amounts of management time and an increasingly high number of personnel, further driving up the cost of ownership.
As a military installation, the base must enforce strict retention and safety policies. It needed transparent, automatic Disaster Recovery that did not demand a lot of personnel to manage and maintain.
The ideal solution had to virtualise the existing server infrastructure and stay highly scalable, so the base could handle both its current and its future workload cost-effectively.
After testing and researching the market, Aeronautica Militare — with the implementation guided by 1° Av. Capo Scelto Giuseppe Mangia — deployed a 16TB Syneto ULTRA Series array as the main shared storage for VMware virtual machines, then added a second 24TB Syneto ARK Series array dedicated to Disaster Recovery. Both run Syneto Storage OS for a total of 40TB raw.
The entire legacy server infrastructure was virtualised on the 16TB ULTRA Series. Syneto Storage OS uses VirtualUnity to integrate smoothly with VMware, dramatically lowering IT infrastructure costs.
The hybrid ULTRA array uses FlexPool technology with an SSD flash layer to deliver millisecond-latency reads and writes, combining the low cost of spinning disks with the speed of flash.
Syneto InstaSnap takes nearly instant, automatically scheduled Snapshots of all data on the primary ULTRA array and replicates them to the 24TB ARK Series array. Only changes since the last transfer are sent, keeping replication fast and efficient.
Snapshots, replication and VMware integration are automated. With Syneto Storage OS designed for usability, the base needs only minimal management time, cutting personnel and ownership costs.
With its servers virtualised on the ULTRA Series and Snapshots replicated to the ARK Series, the 22nd Radar Squadron cut maintenance effort, gained genuine Disaster Recovery across two separate arrays, and can now scale storage quickly and cost-effectively as data volumes grow.
With virtualised servers on the ULTRA Series and snapshots replicated to the ARK Series, the 22nd Radar Squadron meets its retention and safety policies, controls ownership costs, and can scale as data volumes grow — all with minimal management overhead.
