The Challenge
Silca is a leading European manufacturer of key blanks and key-cutting machines. They needed to Replace a cumbersome and slow legacy IT infrastructure that required constant attention.
The Silca team wanted to replace a complex legacy IT infrastructure. With more than 400 employees using data-intensive design software, Silca needed a solution that could match its strong growth. Specifically, Silca’s IT team was looking to consolidate its production workstations through virtualisation and create a virtual desktop infrastructure.
The Objective
Silca decided to simplify the production-critical workstation environment which was using legacy hardware and a big chunk of the IT departments’ time. In order to achieve a reduction in management times and resources, Silca opted for a Virtual Desktop Infrastructure type solution which would help them quickly deploy new workstation on an as-needed basis.
The 40+ workstations which would be virtualised are production-critical and the underpinning storage solution would need to provide consistent, high performance and seamlessly integrate with its existing VMware technology.
The Solution
In order to meet Silca’s criteria Syneto deployed its all-flash EXTREME Series 220 AFA array, which delivers over 340k IOPS and an immediate 3x data reduction thanks to Syneto’s SpaceBoost technology which maximises capacity utilisation with deduplication and block-by-block in-line data compression, increasing IO efficiency and write speed while reducing the required storage capacity by two thirds.
As a result the EXTREME array’s 8TB of raw capacity offer Silca 24TB of actual usable storage. Furthermore, thin provisioning ensures that additional storage is only allocated when it is actually needed.
