Ransomware is one of them. This threat is real and is not going away any time soon. But in order to keep it away from your data, you should first understand what it is. So what is ransomware and how does it work?

What is ransomware?

Ransomware is a form of malicious software (also called “malware”) that has the ability of “locking” a computer or a network, denying the users’ access to the data. After the malware is installed, the attacker demands a ransom from the victim, promising to restore access to the data only after receiving the payment. Of course, the promise isn’t always kept.

Ransomware is usually installed accidentally when someone clicks an infected attachment or link. The malware then encrypts the data on the computer or network, displaying a request for a ransom.

The number of ransomware attacks has been increasing in recent years, with more and more types of ransomware being constantly developed. Some of the most infamous ones, that have caused a lot of damage are: WannaCry, NotPetya, CryptoLocker, SamSam.
